Sovereign Tea releases July 2021 next month. Let's talk about where we are and what's left.

The Third Development Podcast

We sat down to discuss the latest happenings in Sovereign Tea! In this one we actually show some pretty significant pieces of content for the game. We show the entirety of the reworked scene post-Level 08,  as well as dive into longform discussions about Level 09's unique level  design. Those of you who are very astute may notice that our gameplay  footage includes a new music track created by our composer and funded by your kind support!

Atop of all that, we'd also like to make a special announcement about our vlogs...

We're going to host a Q+A for our next video devlog! We will record this  in two weeks on the weekend of June 18-20. You can ask us anything  you'd like regarding the development of Sovereign Tea! May 2021 Update: Preparing for release!

Let's start with the big news: Sovereign Tea will launch this July!

You can read our latest devlog on itch.io where we cover this topic and over game design updates, including showing off the snazzy above units.

Beyond that, we are very excited to announce that our Steam page is finally live! Wishlisting the game will help its visibility, and thus help the game achieve launch success. Feel free to wishlist the title and share with your friends!

With the top level announcements out of the way, let's dig into some more Kickstarter-specific updates.

Current status of deliverables

We initially wanted to release this month and worked quite hard to reach that goal. As it stands, the game is almost fully ready, and in theory could be released this month... but we'd like some more time to test  everything, find bugs, and give it the polish it needs. As such, we are  now aiming to release July 2021, two months from now. This should provide us ample time to wrap everything up without having to rush.

We intended to ship rewards out by now, but as it stands, we are currently still waiting for inventory to arrive. As a result, we have not yet begun shipping out the rewards. We've already locked down addresses and realize this may be a problem for some individuals who may move soon. If your address is going to change in the next three months, please let us know. We can hold your order and delay its shipment for when you're ready to receive it.

The current plan for the OC commission-based rewards still holds to be delivered after the game launches. This is because we want to commit our artists to wrapping up any work that's needed. We expect that we will reach out to you to gather your OC requests by the end of June.

We realize that a delay, even a short one like this, is disappointing for many of you. This extra time is important to us as it allows us to ensure that the game releases at the highest quality it can release, while also allowing us time to work on supplementary game materials, like marketing materials, a new trailer, video devlogs, and more.

It is worth noting the following: all backers who backed at tiers that will receive the digital copy of the game will receive Steam keys for the game. Even if you've used the previously provided itch.io keys to play the beta, you will still receive Steam keys if you backed at the eligible tiers. You may choose to redeem them yourself or hand them off to a friend.

Development Updates from April

We cover a lot more detail on this subject on our itch.io devlog, but we wanted to share some of our latest work with you here as well.

As we stated last update, we're reworking the scenario for Level 08, a level in the existing beta, to feature Masala Chai. This features some new CGs that we're still iterating on. Enjoy the above WIP!

We've also been working on specific scenarios to flesh out the rich history of the world of Sovereign Tea. This includes letters discussing non-playable characters, such as the one shown above. Who is she? Well, that's a secret you won't discover until the game launches!

We're bummed out about having to wait two months longer to release this game, but we're grateful for your patience. Seeing our game appear in Steam searches for the first time has been both incredible and humbling, especially since this is the first time a 3 Halves Games title has shown up on Steam. In fact, this is the first game we've made with so large a scope it required additional funding! That's all possible thanks to you and your support over the years. Thank you.

As we inch closer to the eventual release of Sovereign Tea, we'd like to remind you that you can connect with us on a great multitude of platforms. April 2021 Update: Putting it all together

Last month was one of our busiest months yet in Sovereign Tea's development! We have published our largest devlog to date on our itchio going into the nitty gritty details, but let's provide a bit of a recap of what you can expect:

  • The current overall development progress for every level of the game (nearly 100% done)
  • Longform discussion on a new gameplay mechanic, Counting
  • Showcase of new Milk-based units; units with multiple forms that upgrade using Counting mechanics
  • Longform discussion on how we balance Milk and Counting against pre-existing mechanics
  • Showcase of new non-Milk units, like these three fun ones above
  • Longform discussion on a great multitude of tooltip improvements
  • Discussion on gameplay optimization and performance, including the surprisingly CPU-intensive tooltips
  • Longform discussion on intended narrative adjustments to Level 08, a level that appears in the beta
  • Discussion on the narrative role of Masala Chai and why narrative adjustments are happening
  • Quick updates on the remaining work needed for the art, audio, and writing pipelines
  • Quick list on all the planned work to do this April to get the game to as close a finished state as possible

Physical Backer Rewards

We have been ordering and preparing all the backer rewards. We are locking addresses this month and plan to start shipping by the end of the month.
